Brief
Use planting to create a new identity for the redesigned entrance to an elementary school, helping to filter pollution from a nearby road.
Our approach
This banked site presented many horticultural challenges due to the condition of the soil and anticipated water run off from the sloping playground surfaces. It called for a garden design for shade and a garden design for slopes.
New trees and wide leaf hedging and grasses around the playground’s perimeter would be used to help capture air borne particles, whilst the sustainable, perennials planted underneath would seasonally reflect the school’s colours and provide a resource to help educate pupils about the pollination process with many bee and butterfly friendly species used.
The planting scheme also compliment’s the impressive school building and will hopefully become a garden design landmark on London’s south circular.
